Assignment 2 Research

Play - Hamlet

Plot - Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, attempts to get revenge on his uncle for killing his father and then marrying his mother.

Essential Theme #1
Revenge - Hamlet's uncontrollable desire to get back at his uncle for murdering his father is the primary reason why he acts the way he does throughout the play.

Essential Theme #2
Insanity - While Hamlet clearly let's the audience know that he feigns his insanity as part of his revenge, he really does go insane thinking about it.

Essential Theme #3
Morality - Hamlet's constant thoughts about suicide is also part of his insanity.  It not only affects him, but Ophelia as well (which as we know was fatal).

Word that evokes the play - dissonance (an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding conflicting ideas simultaneously).  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance

Class Notes 1/3/2011

Podcast - radio-like programs for a small group of people (i.e. Long Island teens who like cricket).

When placing research on your blog, make sure to list your reference URLs, pictures, bullet points, should consist of 30-50 words; like a long e-mail.

When using music in your podcast, the simpler it is (less instruments) the better.  Your voice should not trail off at the end of each word (most common mistake).

Ambient sound - background sound.

Women Futurists: "Yet To Be Femmes"

The World Future Society: http://www.wfs.org/

An article on the impact women futurists will have on the world: http://www.metafuture.org/articlesbycolleagues/IvanaMilojevic/women-futures-studies.htm

Questions to ask
-  How does the social, economic, and technological change shape the future?
-  By understanding such change, can we better anticipate what our world will be like in 5, 10, or even 20 years?
-  Will we be able to make choices today that will have known consequences in the future?
-  By visualizing the future, can we create it?

-  Men are much more tech-savvy than women.
-  Men tend to focus more on the "grand scheme of things," whereas women focus more on the emotional aspects.

Is this the future?

There is a lack of women in the scientific and technological fields.  As the world continues to see more and more advances in both areas, it is important that we learn and create as much as we can.

"Women in Technology: A Call to Action," by Carmen Nobel: http://www.infoworld.com/d/developer-world/women-in-technology-call-action-919

Only 50 years ago, the workforce was dominated by men who were expected to bring in the money.  Women were supposed to live domestically; taking care of children and their husbands by cooking, cleaning, and maintaining the house.
Nowadays, a majority of women are in the workforce along with men, while children are usually brought to daycare, babysat, or somewhat old enough to be on their own for a few hours.
